An Unseenly Sign

I noticed this sign while sitting on a bench at Bethesda Place. It's a pity this classy, refined sign is now hidden by foliage the photo hints at; I may be the only non-groundskeeper to see it in months.

A Sunday Sermon

Yes, I've been quiet for two years. Best laid plans, and all that. I've concluded that I actually need to read less, and write more, both diary/short stories and blog posts. You likely won't see the stories; aren't the posts punishment enough?

But anyway, fall Sunday's in DCTown are surprisingly pleasant. Today was in the mid-70;s, sunny, low humidity, with a nip in the air. Love it. Opted to while away the day reading at a local cafe.

The local Donut King in Kensington, still makes old-school cake doughnuts, as opposed to Krispy Kreme's air-filled sugar bombs. Their breakfast sammies are rather good, too. They even have deviled eggs! So a bacon/egg on wheat, deviled eggs, and two donuts later and I was ready for some coffee, so off to Bethesda, and the Caribou Coffee therein. Their Mint Chocolate Lattes work for me. Today's trivia answer turned out to be the Flintstones' address. As if.

While sitting outside, I noticed the youngish foreign student sitting next to me start making the move inside. Plug in the laptop, and all that. It took him two trips to schlep in all the gear, but I noticed he was going to simply LEAVE an empty cup sitting on the table! I asked him to grab it, then gently insisted. For some reason, he did grab it, protesting all the while that it wasn't his, or that someone else would take care of it. Fifteen minutes later, a trio of young women sat down at 'his' table. Ten minutes later, I too went inside.

I stopped at his table, pointed outside, and gently told him that because he'd done the right thing, they were able to sit right down. "I'd guess you're here from another country. If you go to one of our National Parks, you'll see many signs. One of them reads: 'Take nothing but pictures / Leave nothing but footprints'. Ponder that one for awhile".

His eyes widened, and the light of understanding crossed his face. Two years ago, I wouldn't have had the grace to do that.
